Happy Birthday Nabi Muhammed (SAW)

The beautiful month of Rabi UL-Awal has approached, Muslims around the world celebrate the birth month of the last prophet in Islam, Nabi Muhammad (SAW). In Cape Town the Muslim community are having Moulood programs the entire month and all are welcomed to attend.

Growing up I remember cutting ‘rampies’ at madrassah, the ladies and girls would all sit together and recite praise for our Beloved Prophet Nabi Muhammad (SAW). It’s a very special occasion, we would dress in our white salaah tops and scarfs. I remember feeling a sense of unity at this gathering as we came together for one purpose, to celebrate the prophet’s birthday. Just the smell of lemongrass takes me back to these days.  https://www.vocfm.co.za/rampies-sny-unique-celebration-prophets-birthday/

This year I want to try and take my boys to experience it, but I must prepare myself to for the following:

  • Uthmaan will run around the entire time and I will be chasing him trying my utmost to get him to sit still.
  • Ebrahim will sit still and cut rampies but will ask me 10,000 questions at the same time.
  • I will have this constant fear that the kids are making a noise and interrupting everyone that after 5 minutes of arriving I am ready to leave.
So do I go or not?

Ahmed and I have agreed that we will be going to the mosque for the Moulood program. Over the years, many mosques in Cape Town have become very considerate of parents bringing their young kids to the mosque. It is encouraged that kids attend, as they learn only by experience. The mosque my family enjoys going to is Harvey road mosque in Claremont. My husband has been attending this mosque since he was a child. Coincidentally, my dad has been attending the same mosque for possibly the last 40 years. The resident Sheikh, Sheikh Faadiel Emandien has been able to bridge the gap between Old & Young so beautifully that people want to attend.

Thank you, Sheikh my family and I feel very welcomed at your mosque.

How do we explain the significance of this month to our boys?  I don’t remember how my parents explained it to me.

But the easiest way for me to explain to them is to explain that it is his birthday on Saturday, and we are going to celebrate it by going to the mosque. I can already hear Ebrahim asking me: “Is the going to be a jumping castle and are we going to get party packs.”

Instead of saying no, I will be making two party packs for the boys.

Our beloved prophet passed on many virtues but the one that stands out the most to me is his view on children. A quick Hadith (hadith is a record of the traditions or sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). https://www.britannica.com/topic/Hadith

It has been narrated: They had gone out with the Prophet to a meal to which they had been invited, and Husain was there playing in the street. The Prophet came in front of the people and stretched out his hands, and the child started to run here and there. The Prophet made him laugh until he caught him, then he put one hand under his chin and the other on his head and kissed him, and said,
“Husain is part of me and I am part of him. May Allah love those who love Husain. Husain is a tribe among tribes.” (Sunan Ibn Majah).  https://cityislam.com/hadith/how-to-treat-children-according-to-quran-and-sunnah/

What a great man he was ….  Let’s try and live by his example.

As- salaam
Ayesha.
