When you
think of having a baby, you think that everything will be easy. Maybe they will
fall asleep by himself/herself, your home will be constantly clean, and life
will just continue as it currently is….
Well…. I
am so sorry to tell you that is all a lie.
It’s hard
being a parent, you have all these choices to make from the type of formula to
use to the nappies the child must wear (oh this is an important one, coz you
don’t want leaks), but once you’ve mastered all of this you think you okay and
then out of nowhere, they are 2 years old and ……. full of attitude.
Yes,
your baby has attitude and all you can think is when the hell did this happen?
I must admit
though that some 2-year-olds miss this stage or are not that bad, Ebrahim was
this child. Uthmaan…. ai Uthmaan, he is takes this stage to another level.
A few Saturday's ago we had an impromptu braai with some friends at home. Thankfully we only
had to braai sausage (boerie braai).
By the time
our friends arrive it’s about 5pm. Normally the boys would be chilling as “witching
hour” is approaching, but as we have friends over, we allow them to play
longer. This all goes well until Uthmaan…. tries to put his black motorbike
(scooter) on the trampoline, coz he wants to ride while the other kids jump. So
off I run to get my son away from the trampoline with his motorbike. I think to
myself okay, crisis adverted. 15 minutes later Uthmaan has thrown the ball over
the fence that divides the pool from the yard and is trying to open the gate to
go and get it. Oh, did I mention he is still on his motorbike… so off I run to
stop him. I manage to get the ball back and the kids continue to play.
As the sun
is setting, I call the kids in from outside, I get the bath ready as once they bathed,
they can watch a movie after supper and go and sleep.
Ebrahim is
first to bath, coz he realized that if he baths first, he gets to play inside
with his friends for longer. So, I did not have to ask him twice to get in and
5 min later he was done and ready to be dressed. Uthmaan, was the same quick in
the bath and quick out.
After
supper I put on a movie for the kids, while the adults sat in the kitchen for
some well-deserved adult convo. 15 minutes into the movie all we hear is a
crashing noise from the lounge…. Uthmaan decided he had enough of the movie and
wanted to play with his toys while the other kids watched the movies, so off I
run to stop him. The moment I walk into the room he stops playing and runs to
the couch. I ask him to please sit still and watch the movie and he agrees he
will. Back to the kitchen I go to join in the conversation. Not even 5 minutes
later Uthmaan is up and running around in the lounge with his toy car making a
noise. Back to the lounge I go to try and stop Uthmaan. The same thing happens
as before, I walk in, he stops and agrees to sit and watch the movie.
Silly me
believes that he will do this, but I ran up and down at least 10 times to get
him to sit and watch the movie.
By 9pm,
I’ve had enough and try and put him to sleep, but this is a mission on its own
as he is too tired and can’t fall asleep.
Finally, I get him to sleep and come out of the room as my friends are
leaving on to be told “Eish Ayesha, no wonder you stay thin, Uthmaan keeps you
busy”.
I smile and
say I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love that the boys keep me busy and
drive me insane, it’s all part of being a parent.
Fast
forward to a few days later, I get a message from Uthmaan’s school principal.
They are going to start potty training next week……. you can only imagine the
stories I will have about trying to potty train Uthmaan.
Till next
time.
